#1 Inspect Your Vehicle

Before embarking on your Alberta road trip this month, our service team wants to remind you that one of the best summer driving tips is to take the time to give your Lexus a thorough inspection. Check the tire pressure, oil levels, brake fluid, and coolant. If you do not have the time to do it, why not bring it to us? We would gladly inspect your vehicle to make sure it was ready for the road.

Remember: a well-maintained vehicle not only enhances safety but also contributes to fuel efficiency and saving money at the pumps this August is a top priority for every Edmonton driver.

2. Stay Hydrated

We are big fans of hydration around here. You probably figured that out with our stacks of complimentary water bottles all over the dealership. Long drives under the summer sun can lead to dehydration which is proven to affect your focus and reaction time. Always keep a supply of water in the vehicle and encourage all of your passengers to stay hydrated as well. If you're travelling with children or pets, remember that they need adequate hydration as well. Need a new water bottle? We have several options in our Lexus Boutique.

3. Plan for Breaks

Long journeys can be tiring, so plan regular breaks during your drive. Stretch your legs, take in the scenery, and refresh yourself. Well-timed breaks not only help prevent fatigue but also allow you to enjoy the journey to the fullest. All Alberta Rest Areas facilities operate from 7 AM to 11 PM daily. 4. Protect Against the Sun

Sunlight streaming through windows can be intense during the summer. Use sun shades or window visors to protect your interior from UV rays and keep the cabin cooler. We also recommend regularly applying sunscreen if you plan on spending time outside the vehicle during breaks.

5. Check the Weather and Road Conditions

Summer weather can be unpredictable and road conditions may change due to construction or maintenance. Stay updated on weather forecasts and road advisories before you begin your journey. This preparation helps you anticipate any challenges and choose the best routes. To check for closures and conditions on your summer road trip route, click here.

6. Pack an Emergency Kit

Even with careful planning, unexpected situations can arise. Prepare an emergency kit that includes essentials such as first aid supplies, a flashlight, water, non-perishable snacks, and basic tools. If you're travelling to more remote areas, consider including items like a spare tire and jumper cables. And remember: every New and Certified Pre-Owned Lexus vehicle purchased from us includes 24-hour emergency roadside and mechanical breakdown assistance, 365 days a year, in Canada or the continental US. 7. Avoid Peak Traffic

Summer is a popular time for travel, and traffic can get congested, especially around holidays. Whenever possible, plan your departure to avoid peak traffic hours. This not only saves you time but also reduces stress and contributes to safer driving conditions. Our team at Lexus South Pointe loves using the Waze app - a community-driven navigation app that supports drivers with real-time road alerts and an up-to-the-moment map. You can download Waze for iOS here.

8. Stay Mindful of Pedestrians and Bicyclists

Warmer weather often means more pedestrians and bicyclists on the road. Stay vigilant, especially in urban areas and near recreational areas. Always yield the right of way to pedestrians at crosswalks and be cautious when passing cyclists.

The Lexus Pedestrian Detection system leverages a combination of advanced cameras, sensors, and radar systems to constantly monitor the area in front of the vehicle. It's particularly attentive to areas where pedestrians are likely to be, such as crosswalks, intersections, and crowded urban environments.

If the system detects a potential collision with a pedestrian, it provides the driver with a visual and audible warning. In situations where the driver's response isn't immediate or sufficient to avoid a collision, the system can automatically apply the brakes to help mitigate or even prevent the impact.

9. Maintain a Safe Following Distance

Increased traffic and potential congestion can lead to sudden stops. Maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you, allowing ample time to react to unexpected situations. Thankfully, all our clients know that in the pursuit of creating safer and more relaxed driving experiences, Lexus has integrated an impressive technology known as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC). This sophisticated system takes cruise control to the next level by maintaining a set speed and adjusting your Lexus’ speed to ensure a safe following distance from the vehicle in front of you.

10. Stay Cool, Calm & Collected

Traffic, detours, and other unexpected events can sometimes be frustrating. Practice patience and maintain a calm demeanour while driving. Stress can affect your decision-making and reaction time, so a composed mindset contributes to safer driving. We recommend making a pit stop for a bite when you feel tired or irritable. Road snacks often help the driving blues.
